COMPLETE INFORMATION ON SEAL LEAGUE

Here is all the information about the Southeast Austin Lunchtime basketball league. The SEAL league is a niche league because all games are during lunchtime. This is great for players with families and flexible work hours for whom it is easier to get an hour away from work that to get an hour away from home in the evening. Our league has been around since 1988 but for the first 15 years was only open to AMD employees. Now it is open to anyone.

The SEAL league has three seasons per year: Spring, Summer and Fall. We play between 10 and 12 regular season games each season plus an end of season tournament. Games are officiated by members of the Texas Sports Officials Association. We are lucky to have some of the best basketball officials in central Texas and quite honestly the officials are one of the best qualities of our league. Games will be at East Communities YMCA (on Ed Bluestein Blvd near MLK in east Austin) and First Evangelical Free Church (on Monterey Oaks Blvd near Mopac and Ben White in southwest Austin). Each team will play one game each week except for bye weeks. Games start between 11:00 and 1:00 and with two twenty minute running time halves take approximately one hour. Games may be Tues, Wed, Thu, and/or Fri depending on the number of teams. We can accommodate legitimate scheduling requests such as day of the week preference or gym preference. For example, if you work at Motorola and can fit driving to the YMCA in your lunch schedule but not driving to FEFC. If you have a strong gym preference, we can guarantee at least 3/4 of your games at your preferred gym but you will have to drive for a couple games.

The SEAL league has two separate divisions. Division I is the competitive division. Most players in Division I played high school varsity basketball or have developed their skills to a level where they could now play on the varsity level. Several players have college experience but this is the exception rather than the rule. Division II is the recreational division. The level of play in Division II is still high as most players have solid skills and basketball knowledge. The biggest difference is in overall athletic ability and the speed of the game. You choose when you sign up which division you prefer to play in. We may ask some players to switch divisions to balance the number of players on each team or number of teams in each division but we will not force anyone to play in a division where they do not want to play. Some players choose to play in both divisions.

You will be able to sign up for either division as an individual or as a team. If I believe a team is unfairly strong I will discuss with the captain and split it up in the interests of fair competition -- although I hope this will not be an issue.

All players are required to have a reversible mesh jersey with a number. It must be white on one side and any dark color on the other side. Alternately if you have a white jersey with a number and a separate dark jersey with a number that is fine also.

The cost will be determined after I see how many teams sign up. he cost will be around $60 per player or $420 per team. All fees go to gym rental, officials, and T-shirts for league champions. Employees for large companies should ask if their employers will sponsor them to participate in the league as AMD does.

Word about the SEAL league will only spread through word of mouth. Please forward this message to anyone you know that might be interested in playing. To encourage this, for each new player that you refer, you will get $10 off the league fee. New players are eligible for this referral discount as well. The most important thing for new players is that they will be reliable in attending the games. If you have any questions about the league, please e-mail the league commissioner by clicking here.
